Source code for the original Xbox console has leaked online, according to a report fromThe Verge. This code includes a kernel for the operating system, build environments and the Xbox Development Kit. Code for Windows NT 3.5 was also leaked. The original Xbox operating system is a custom version of Windows 2000.

Microsoft told The Verge that “We’re aware of these reports and are investigating,” when asked for comment on the Xbox source code, though there was no comment on the Windows NT 3.5 code.

While the original Xbox released in 2001, Xbox Live support ran until 2010.At E3 2017, Xbox revealed that some original Xbox titles would start joining the backward compatibility program on Xbox One. In total, 41 original Xbox games are backward compatible on Xbox One and will also be playable onXbox Series X.

The backward compatibility team at Xbox stopped releasing new backward compatible titlesafter E3 2019, as the team was beginning to work on ensuring games would be compatible with Xbox Series X, then referred to as Project Scarlett.
