An all-new Sonic the Hedgehog game,Sonic Superstarswas just shown off at Summer Game Fest, part of theE3 2023announcement season.
The game returns Sonic back to his 2D roots in an all-original title from Sonic Team, for the first time since 2017’sSonic Mania. The game is set to launch on allPS5,Xbox Series X|S,Nintendo Switchand PC this “Fall 2023,” so expect it to release sometime between September and December.
This is huge news for fans eager for more of the hedgehog afterSonic Frontiers.Multiple playable characters are also confirmed, including Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. The 2.5D art style is sure to prove divisive, but many fans are sure to welcome a return to the two-dimensional side-scrolling format.
It’s been a massive few years for Sonic as the franchise finally seems to have found its footing again.Sonic Frontiersimpressed with its bold new direction.Sonic Origins, while a flawed collection, introduced new fans to the hedgehog’s original games. Meanwhile, Sonic’s been lighting up the silver screen with two successful movies, the well-receivedSonic Primeon Netflix and the upcoming Knuckles spin-off TV show.
WhetherSonic Superstarswill hold up to the high bar of quality set bySonic Maniaremains to be seen. However, it certainly looks a cut above the ill-fatedSonic the Hedgehog 4.Massive props to Sonic Team, too, for including several iconic characters to play as right off the bat.
Sonic Superstarsisn’t the only project coming from Sonic Team this year.Sonic Origins Plus, the updated version of last year’s compilation, launches on June 23, Sonic’s official birthday. The second bigSonic Frontiersupdate is also speculated to release on the same day.
Sonic Frontiersalso has free story DLC coming later this year, so Sonic fans have plenty to look forward to throughout this year and next.
