With all the excitement present in the air, since the launch of Microsoft’s new operating system, we’ve all ignored an important factor that is about to change the rules of the game.

To be more exact, the new OS reveal has nearly quadrupled prices for a little-known security chip on eBay. The main reason behind this is that this same chip is necessary to run Windows 11.

The price quadrupled in a matter of hours

The above-mentioned chip is called the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0. After Microsoft revealed, on Thursday,that PCs will need this in order to run Windows 11,everything changed.

This new hardware requirement is pushing customers to flock to eBay, in order to obtain TPM 2.0 modules for their PCs. Needless to say that at least one vendor is capitalizing on the outrageous demand.

Thursday, there were two listings for Gigabyte TPM 2.0 modules, posted by an Israeli electronics shop called KSMTop, which increased in price dramatically from $24.90 to $99.00.

However, that was Thursday. If you are planning on buying one of these chips now, be ready to empty your savings, as the price already increased to $199.90.

And this is just after a few days since Microsoft made the great announcement. Imagine how much these chips will go for in the near future.

Where can I buy a TPM 2.0 chip from?

For those of you looking to get your hands on one of these much desired chips, know that you can do so by visiting:

Note that, while some of these stores might still have an available batch of these coveted chips, others can no longer provide them at the moment, as they are out of stock.

And, as we mentioned above, choose your seller wisely, as the TPM 2.0 chips cost a lot more than they did just a few days ago.

Last week, if you wanted such a piece of hardware, you only had to pay $25. The story is a bit different now, after Microsoft announced Windows 11.

Getting a chip for the same amount of money nowadays is matter of extreme luck. On eBay, a TPM 2.0 chip is now going for as much as $199.90.

And the prices are much likely to keep growing so you should also keep that in mind while hunting for components.

Your computer may already have a TPM 2.0 chip installed

Before you panic and throw a fortune out the window, you have to know that your PC may already have a TPM 2.0 chip built in.

As you might know, the technology was first introduced in October 2014, meaning that a laptop or desktop from the last five to seven should have a TPM 2.0 function.

Also worth mentioning is that the security chip isn’t always turned on by default. In order to actually enable it, you’ll need to go into your PC’s BIOS settings and search for this feature.

An easier way to find out whether your PC has the security chip is by going to the Windows 10 search bar and typing intpm.msc.

If by chance you have the chip, you should see an option fortpm.mscMicrosoft Common Console Document.

What a lot of users are more curious about, is whether Microsoft is going to help them in any way, with this whole chip madness.

Just to be on the safe side, you candownload and run the PC Health Check app, which tells you if the device is compatible with Windows 11.

We’ll just have to wait and see how this situation evolves in the near future. One thing is sure though, the price for these security chips is not likely to drop anytime soon.
