Running a reliable antivirus program is essential for your computer’s performance since there are millions of malware circulating on the internet that could cause your computer to behave in strange ways — or even take control of it.
As a result, the last thing you want to see on your computer’s screen is an alert informing you that your PC has been unprotected for a number of days. This message usually appears when your antivirus program has expired or has been disabled and affects Windows 7, 8.1 and Windows 10 computers.
[…] a big notice covers the screen and says : Your pc has been unprotected for x days
In the ‘action center’ no notifications are checked, so I don’t know where this message is coming from. What setting is prompting this alert? How can I stop it from happening?
I have another computer — right next to this one — on the same network with the same configuration (unless I missed something) that does not show this error.
Fix: “Your PC has been unprotected for x days”
- Run a full system scan
Some malware work by disabling your antivirus program. Check to see if your antivirus has been disabled this way and if this is the case, turn it on again. Then, install the latest OS and antivirus updates on your computer and run a full system scan.
Additionally, use an anti-hacking tool to scan your computer for specific threats. If you haven’t installed an anti-hacking program yet, check outthis list of the best anti-hacking toolsto use.
- Check your antivirus subscription
Make sure that your antivirus subscription is still active. If your free security software has expired, uninstall the non-Microsoft security software and turn Windows Defender on or download and installanother antivirus programof your choice.
-
Run a SFC scan
-
Clean your registry
Registry changes may also trigger various antivirus issues. Use adedicated registry cleanerto repairfaulty registry entries.
- Uninstall and reinstall your antivirus
If your antivirus is completely unresponsive, uninstall and then reinstall it.
